Brief History of the Library

In 1969, a group of concerned residents from Clifton Park and Halfmoon established the Shenendehowa Free Library. The name, Shenendehowa, was chosen by the original trustees because of its familiarity and acceptance in the two towns. The original Library was located above the National Commercial Bank and Trust Company (now Key Bank) on Route 9 and 146 in Clifton Park.

In 1971, the Shenendehowa Free Library moved to the old schoolhouse on Cemetery Road in Halfmoon. By 1980, through the generosity of many contributors, the library was again on the move. This time it was to a new 4,600 sq. ft. facility at our current location on Clifton Country Road.

The Library quickly began to outgrow the facility, and in 1988 the voters approved an expansion to the Library. Construction began in 1989, and in 1990 the expanded facility was open to the public. The new building nearly quadrupled the original size of the Shenendehowa Public Library!

By 2004 the facility was in dire need of expansion to keep pace with the growing demand for library services. In September 2004, voters approved a proposal for a new 55,000 sq. ft. library to be built on 10.92 acres on Moe Rd. in Clifton Park. On December 11, 2006 the new Library opened to the public.
