Do I need to bring my library card to check out materials?

Yes. The library recommends that you have your library card to check out items. However, when picking up reserved items, the library card that items are reserved under must be presented when you come to pick up those items. If someone else is picking up your items for you, they must present your library card as the items are reserved under a library card number, not a name.

How do I renew materials?

Renewals may be done in person and over the phone during normal business hours. Please be prepared to give your library card number if you phone in your renewal. Renewals may also be done on the computer using the Patron Account feature of the Web Catalog. Items may be renewed if...

  • There are renewals left. Most items may be renewed twice.
  • No one is waiting for the item.
  • The lending library allows renewals (if the item is from interlibrary loan).

For more information, see About the Online Catalog and Patron Account. or view our tutorial on Renewing your library materials online.

Why couldn't I renew my items online?

Most items can be renewed two times, however, renewals are not guaranteed. There are many reasons why you may not be successful in your attempts at Renewing items. Some of these reasons are:

  • Someone else has reserved the item.
  • There are no more renewals left.
  • Your library card account is about to expire.
  • You owe $5.00 or more on your account.
  • You have 5 or more items overdue.

The library staff recommends you try and renew your items a day or two before the due date to avoid overdue charges on items not renewable.

Where can I return items when the library is closed?

For your convenience there are three areas outside the building to return materials. There is a drive up bookdrop, and two book returns. The drive up bookdrop is located to the left of the main entrance. Its open 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. The book returns are located to the left of the Moe Rd. entrance, around the corner on the side of the building. One slot is for books and large items. The other is for audio/visual materials.

Can I return items to another library?

The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library is a member of the SALS/MVLS automated library system. Items borrowed at member libraries may be returned to any other member library unless otherwise stated on the item(s). For a list of member libraries, see SALS member libraries and MVLS member libraries.

What are the fines for overdue materials?

10¢ per day per item unless otherwise stated (this includes books on CD)
25¢ per day for 14-day books
$1.00 per day for CD ROMs, DVD
$5.00 maximum fine for any one item
$10.00 maximum fine per library card for items belonging to the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library returned on the same day.

See CPH Materials Borrowing Overview for a list of materials that may be borrowed, loan periods and fine information.

How can I request a book that shows as "In" on the catalog?

If the item is listed as "In" on the catalog, or if you want to know if it is available in the library, please call the Ask a Librarian Desk at 371-8622. You will be asked to provide your library card number.

How do I request a book if it is not available at this library?

The book can be requested through the online catalog or with the help of a librarian as a reserve. Reserves may be filled by any library in the system, first come, first serve. Note: There may be a waiting list for popular items.

To place the reserve from the catalog, locate the item in the catalog and select the "Place Request" button. You will be asked for your library card number and PIN.

When picking up reserved items, the library card that items are reserved under must be presented when you come to pick up those items. If someone else is picking up your items for you, they must present your library card as the items are reserved under a library card number, not a name.

See our tutorial on Reserving materials at the library for instructions.

What items may I borrow from other libraries?

Each lending library has their own policies regarding the types of materials available through interlibrary loan. Generally, books, microfilm, and photocopied articles are available through this service. DVD's, videos, music CD's and books on CD are typically not available through interlibrary loan.

Is there a charge for this service?

There is no charge for materials reserved through our online catalog. Typically, there is not a charge associated with the lending of materials from the New York State Library, Capital District libraries, and college and university libraries. Some college and university libraries and out of state libraries may charge a processing fee of $15.00 - $20.00. The lending policy of each library is different. In addition, you will be charged postage if the item is delivered by mail or UPS. These charges will not be assessed without your knowledge and approval.

May I renew Interlibrary Loan items?

Renewal policies are determined by the library sending the item to our Library. Please contact the Library at 371-8622 for more specific information.
