Sunset
It was a long day,
a beautiful day.
One of those days where the sky is so blue
it hurts to look at it.
The sun sinks down in the West,
and the kids begin to go inside,
leaving behind scattered skates and bikes and jump ropes.
Mothers shriek, "Dinner!"
As the last screen door slams shut,
the brilliant blue begins to fade,
replaced by pink, orange, and red.
All is silent for a moment,
and you lose yourself in the beauty of the sky.
But then a frog croaks,
the crickets chirp,
a sprinkler turns on.
You turn around slowly with a sigh,
but just before you reach your door
you look back into the sky~
and now it is deep indigo, with faint twinkles
of stars that are far away.
A bat swoops overhead
and as you step indoors with a yawn,
shooing away mosquitos
you think to yourself
about all you'll do tomorrow.
