Radiant red butterflies
Flaming yellow songbirds
Flitting in the breeze,
Waltzing in the sunset sky.
You are, not the red butterflies or yellow songbirds,
But, the scarlet and golden leaves of fall.
Drifting colorful specks against the deep blue sky,
Cruising over the bed of air.
You are, the southern cry to the feathered and winged,
The lights-out signal to those in caves and burrows.
A hint, telling us to bundle up against the icy winds,
The order for us to return for study and more lecture.
You're the message from yet to come, Winter Maiden,
The cue for the yearning wishes of the Spring Girl,
The regretful "Farewell" wave to Summer Damsel,
You are the sign that the Autumn Lassie hasn't forgotten us.
Bright scarlet leaves, and
Glamorous golden leaves
Floating in mid-morning current,
Swirling in the crisp autumn air.
