Who Gets Cancer?

By Claire
An interpretation of the novel
"A Time For Dancing"
By Davida Wills Hurwin

People who smoke all their lives
People who don't check their breasts

People in other countries
People in other states

People in other towns
People in other schools

But not my One and Only

Not a young girl
Who has so much to learn

Not a young girl
Who has so much to achieve

Not a young girl
Who has her whole life ahead

Not a young girl
Who did nothing to deserve

Not a young girl
Only sixteen years old

Not a young girl
A beautiful dancer

Not a young girl
Stardom bound

Not my best friend
My other self

Not my best friend
My One and Only

Why cancer
Treated only with poisons
Why cancer
With the power to kill

Why cancer
With no known cure

Why cancer
This long solo journey

Why cancer
What I cannot endure

Why cancer
A path I cannot walk

How can it be real
How can it be true

How can it be happening
To you my One and Only

Why didn't the world stop
Why didn't the nurses pause

Why didn't babies cease to cry
Why didn't traffic stop and notice

My One and Only's life has changed

She will live through her solo journey
She will survive the lone dark path

I have no doubt in mind
That she will find

She will get better
She will live on

Our love for each other
Will help carry her on
